Wiki account registration temporarily disabled!

Previously, I think I disabled regular account creation, and that let OpenID accounts register. This kept away spammers, but still let grandfathered accounts work by logging in using their passwords.

This strategy no longer works and I need to figure out a new one. The OpenID plugin has a setting to only allow OpenID logins, but that then blocks out non-OpenID users. In the meantime, registration is turned off because I can't keep dealing with the many, many spam registering accounts that have been constantly happening since I turned regular registration on. There might need to be Captchas, or some other strategy.

Wiki upgrade in progress

~~I've been putting it off but it needs to be done--expect the wiki to be askew until I finish (or give up and restore the backups until I can figure out what went wrong)!~~ Upgrade is finished!

Upgrade Notes

SemanticQueryFormTool can't be used anymore with the most recent version of Semantic Mediawiki
Right now it's on the default MW skin and I took one of the icons to use for the logo. I'm very very open to new logos--the size to shoot for is 135px by 135px. I might tweak the CSS for the skin a little, but mostly I'll keep to the standard.

If you can go test out the wiki and make sure you can log in, that would be dandy!

A question of nomenclature

So I've been writing and or uodating a series of wiki pages(*), often in pairs for setting up foo and using foo in your code. Titles so far follow the "Setting up Foo" (which may also covers installing, starting/stopping, and troubleshooting) and "Foo" (which covers up writing code for or using in Dreamwidth code).But now, I'm wondering whether that's the best nomenclature and considering renaming "Foo" pages to "Using Foo in code" or something similar. I don't think it's worth having an extra Foo page for that, as it would just link to both and have little content of its own. However, that makes it hard to link to both, when you don't know what information the reader is most likely to want. So I'm considering using [[Category: Foo|Foo]] instead, for those links. What do you guys think?

(*) So far, TheSchwartz is done, Gearman is next (haven't started), and when I'm done I may do Memcache and MogileFS.

Merging duplicate pages?

I was about to update the protocol documentation, and found that we have two pages for it:

http://wiki.dwscoalition.org/notes/XML-RPC_Protocol

The latter is lots more comprehensive, but the former has some interesting semantics code in the source, which I'm not sure how to port over.

Thoughts?

Upgrade to 1.16!

Hello, folks! I have upgraded the wiki to version 1.16 of Mediawiki. Let me know if you run into any weirdness.

I also feel like I should note that I have modified an extension for the browser editor jEdit to let people edit the Dreamwidth wiki using it. Is anybody interested in me distributing this? Let me know!

Today, the wiki's been down for short periods of time because of a power circuit issue at my host. They're looking into it and making sure it gets totally fixed.

Updating Obsolete Information

As most of you know, the Wiki is available space for any information related to the DW project. However, it's been around for quite some time and as such there's a lot of outdated information. We need to clean this up so that the Wiki remains a useful resource for developers and other volunteers. You can help!

There's three things that will greatly help us with this rather large task.

* Update articles to make them useful. There's all sorts of ways to browse them - use the Wiki Toolbox to find some if you need.

* If you don't have the information to update it, but know it needs updating, add this textbox to the top of the page: http://wiki.dwscoalition.org/notes/Template:Obsolete - use the tag {{subst:Obsolete}} (subst adds the correct date stamp).

* If you think a page should just be deleted entirely, add this box to the top of the page: http://wiki.dwscoalition.org/notes/Template:Deletion_Request - use the tag {{subst:Deletion Request}} - an admin will review the request and either remove the page or the box (and leave a talk entry if appropriate).

Myself or foxfirefey can elevate privs on the Wiki if there is some function that would be useful to you that you don't have.

The bots are here!

Recently we've been hit with a vandalbot. They're really common on wikis--they just insert gibberish into pages, or replace real page content with gibberish. It looks like the Bug Report Workflow (Support) got onto their lists and they keep editing gibberish into that page, so I have protected that page so that only non-new registered users can edit it. You can see an example of vandalism here.

It'd be good for folks to keep an eye on the Recent Changes page for other vandalbot activity. If you know how to rollback changes, feel free to, but comment here if you don't. It might also be good to comment here if you do, to keep track of this issue. If they start hitting a wide variety of pages, we might have to look into deterrence methods (like setting it up so that ReCaptcha triggers on all edits by nonregistered users).

Wiki tasklist

I just noticed http://wiki.dwscoalition.org/notes/Wiki_Tasklist. Which other volunteering pages is it worth linking this from, and does it need any updates?

For instance, http://wiki.dwscoalition.org/notes/From_LJ_Suggestions includes a task list, so should probably be linked from that page.

Volunteers in Waiting

The Volunteers in Waiting page doesn't seem to be very useful. People have mentioned that they put their names there and never had any further contact. I'm wondering if we can get rid of the page to avoid further trouble, after contacting everyone currently on it?

Pretty much everyone's provided an email address. What we would need to do is:

a) collate everyone's email addresses, removing spam-traps etc (obviously not on the wiki itself)
b) put together a list of places people can follow up on volunteering
c) write an email including said list
d) send that email to the list of people

For bonus points: team leads from eg. styles, support, etc, could contact those with particular interests in those areas pointing them at more specific resources.

Thoughts?

ETA: Item A was done over the weekend (thanks to wychwood for much of the work), and I've got it in a google spreadsheet. We have everyone listed including information on whether they seem suitable for/interested in support/styles/docs/coding/accessibility.

Project: Getting Started guides

There's a new wiki category: Getting Started. It's now linked from the front page and the sidebar of the wiki.

There are a couple pages in there already, but the development one needs revamping, and we need pages for other areas of the project, such as docs, accessiblity, and support.

Project: Beginner's DW guide

This project is requested, and will probably be managed by, baggyeyes, who thought it would be a good idea to have a convenient list of resources that people new to Dreamwidth would find useful. Tasks that need to be done:

* Figure out a good title for the wiki page
* Collate good resources for people new to Dreamwidth. What are the best FAQs? Things like the list of compatible clients, etc. Commenting with suggestions to this post would probably be much appreciated!
* Organize the list into sensible categories
* Put links to this page on the front page, perhaps in the sidebar

I noticed that the sidebar points to the mailing lists, which are deprecated. Now, the sidebar instead links to the Dreamwidth Communities page. There are probably a few more changes that should be made to the sidebar, to reflect the wiki's update place.

Project: Suggestions collation

This project is requested by azurelunatic and regards the From LJ Suggestions part of the wiki.

* First, suggestions mining should be done from since January '09 in suggestions.
* Then, they should figure out what has been implemented, what already exists as a bug in Bugzilla, what hasn't been examined/discussed already, and then submitting the stuff that hasn't been turned over to dw_suggestions (desirably at a rate limited pace, so dw_suggestions isn't suddenly flooded).

After this is done, we can retire that section of the wiki.

Project: S2 styles documentation

This category of the wiki is in need of a serious revamp:

Also, it was based off of Tabula Rasa. It needs to have the S2-wide things and Tabula-Rasa specific things separated, so we can also make guides for Transmogrified and Negatives.

Basically, we want documentation so that a styles designer can look at it and very quickly figure out all the abilities they have from the built-in classes and layout.

If anybody wants to help out with this, let me know! Describe what your areas of relative expertise are, and I can set you going.

Upgrade to MediaWiki 1.15!

So, MediaWiki 1.15 came out around a month ago and today I've just converted our 1.14 installation to 1.15. I don't think there are any new major features, but there's a chance that something might be a little off, so let me know if you run into any problems.
